Zero Waste Earth Store (ZWES) was engaged by CIMB to support its sustainability efforts through a waste collection and waste segregation training programme, designed to strengthen employees’ understanding of responsible waste management and encourage more sustainable waste practices within the workplace.

The project combined practical waste collection with hands-on awareness and training, helping participants understand not only where waste goes, but also how better segregation at source can improve recycling outcomes and reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.

Building Awareness Through Practical Action

Effective waste management begins with understanding what happens to waste after it leaves our hands. Through the CIMB project, ZWES introduced participants to the importance of waste segregation at source, focusing on how everyday disposal habits can influence recycling and resource recovery.

The training covered key areas such as:

• Understanding different categories of waste
• Identifying recyclable and non-recyclable materials
• Proper segregation of waste at source
• Common mistakes in waste disposal
• The importance of keeping recyclable materials clean and uncontaminated
• Practical approaches to reducing waste generation
• The role of employees in creating a more sustainable workplace

Rather than relying solely on classroom-based learning, the programme incorporated practical activities to make waste segregation easier to understand and apply in the workplace.

From Waste Collection to Resource Recovery

As part of the project, ZWES supported the collection and sorting of selected waste materials from the designated CIMB premises.

Collected materials were assessed and segregated according to their waste categories, helping demonstrate the potential for materials that would otherwise be treated as general waste to be diverted towards recycling or other appropriate recovery pathways.

This approach reinforces an important principle of the circular economy: waste can become a resource when it is properly separated, managed and channelled to the right destination.

Empowering Employees to Take Action

One of the key objectives of the project was to ensure that employees were not simply informed about sustainability, but were empowered to participate in it.

Through practical demonstrations and waste segregation exercises, participants gained a better understanding of how small actions—such as placing the right material in the right bin—can contribute to broader environmental goals.

The training also highlighted that successful waste management is not solely dependent on facilities or collection systems. Employee participation, consistent practices and clear communication are equally important.
